Wizard screen

The recovery wizard is the default start for CnW Recovery.  It displays icons for each possible media type, and also associated physical drives. The user should ensure that the relevant drive has been selected from within the combo box, and then click on the drive icon to start the restore process.  For hard disks, and CDs, the number of partitions / tracks is displayed.

The screen image above shows that it has detected  CD ROM drive, a Hard Disk, memory chip and floppy disk, as well as a disk image file.  If the combo boxes are opened, you can then see if there are more types each drive type. If the drive you wish to recover is not displayed, then first try the 'Refresh drive list' function.  If this does not produce the required result, please read the media detection section of this manual.

The button Disk Image is when analysis is required of a disk image file, rather than a phyiscal disk. Disk images are often useful as a safe copy, or when the physical media is very suspect, or failing.

On startup, it will be noted that all drives are scanned, and this is displayed in the status box at bottom right hand side of the Wizard box. When all drives have been scanned, the message Drive Scan complete will be displayed. Occasionally a drive will make the system appear to hang.  It could be a damaged CDs, or hard drive.  At this point the program is trying to read a few critical sectors to assist in determining what the drive actually is, patience is a virtue, though it should not take more than  1-2 minutes.

At the end of the scanning box, some systems will show SCSI drives.  These may or maynot be actual SCSI drives, but are connected through the SCSI interface.  Typically they will be the same as other system drives, and marked as Claimed.  However, some drives will be shown as unclaimed, and these may be accessed.  These are drives that the PC does not recognise, and example could be a WORM drive.

Once the scan is complete, to make use of the Wizard, ensure that the required drive is high lighted in the combo box. Where there are multiple drives of the same type, it may be necessary to select the actual one you require. Then click on the icon for the drive, and automatic analysis will begin. You may note that some drives appear twice.  This is deliberate, and will help ensure that all drives will appear at least once. The two mappings for a drive will be the logical drive letter, D, F, J etc, or the Physical drive. Which one you use is not important, but occasionally, a drive will only be seen as a Physical drive, rather than a logical drive.

Alternative choices from the Wizard screen, are to Exit the CnW software entirely, or Go to the Main Program  to use manual recovery or to use other functions such as sector viewing.

It should be noted that Drive C or Physical Drive 0 are never displayed as options.  Recovery should never be attempted on the main system drive.  Use a different computer, and ensure that the damaged drive is secondary, or slave drive.  At no time ina  recovery procedure should the failed drive be written to.
